Character Info
Dr. Will Ingram
original
Will is very slender and physically unimposing. He has terrible posture and basically only stands up straight when he's feeling indignant. He's very pale (white guy + space), with dark brown hair and blue eyes. He doesn't put too much stock in his appearance, as is evidenced by his typically messy hair and very tired complexion, but he keeps himself clean and he dresses nice, usually in suits or at least button-down shirts. He normally shaves, but you know, when you're really into a project, things happen. Despite his icons he is never without his glasses. He doesn't do accessories and has few distinguishing features, but he does have some scarring on his right hand where he (temporarily) lost his pinky and ring fingers in an industrial accident as a child.
Will was born on the lowest tier of his society, the son of factory workers who were indebted for literal generations. He spent most of his childhood in dangerous working conditions, crawling around in machinery and handling volatile chemicals. At 14, he was involved in a horrible case of company negligence, resulting in the deaths of dozens of people (some of them Will's fault, but listen, it was self-defense). As the only survivor, and thus the only one who knew who was to blame, he was paid off handsomely to keep his mouth shut, which sort of swapped him instantly into the upper class. He used this sudden privilege to greedily obtain as much education as possible, earning two PhDs and a bunch of other degrees. He went on to become a freelance terraformer, the kind of person who heads up projects to make planets inhabitable.
As a person, Will is kind of insufferable. He's a proud know-it-all who firmly believes that humans are, at their core, violently self-serving. Maybe that's because of his history, and maybe that's because that's how he is, and he's got to justify it some way. He has minimal concern for the welfare of others, unless his survival also depends upon them. He has a tendency to push people away instead of making real connections, because he thinks they're all pointless in the end.
Will occupies Grand Portal #3, a one-bedroom A-frame cabin with sort of a loft layout. It has a ground floor with a small kitchen and sitting area, and a narrow staircase up to an open bedroom. Sometimes he can be found there, but more often he'll be in the inn's bar taking up an entire table, or in rare instances, out by the ore dock to get some space (and maybe stare at the stars, don't @ him).
The best way to reach him, however, will always be his inbox.
Smorts: Will has two PhDs in astrochemistry and planetary engineering, with minor degrees in geology, ecology, and programming. Suffice to say he's had All The Schooling, but he's naturally pretty bright. In modern terms he would've been a "gifted" child, and he still retains a lot of the knowledge of chemistry and machinery that he learned when younger. He picks up new information rather easily, and likes to learn new things, despite his resistance to the idea that someone might know more than him.
Survival: There are two parts to this. First, he has some legitimate wilderness survival skills. Nothing that would let him live indefinitely off the land, but he could certainly keep himself (and maybe others) alive for a while. He's done it before. The second part is that he's just an absolute cockroach, a mix of luck, cleverness, and extreme determination. It really is a wonder someone managed to kill him, considering the other situations he's managed to come out of.
Tech-Savvy: Will is from the distant future, and in his time they have things like faster-than-light travel and quantum computers. The technology level of Beacon is literally ancient for him, but thankfully not so ancient that he can't still get by with it. He's very adept with the tablets' built-in computers, able to alter them to serve his needs in both the hardware and software departments, and he can do virtually anything he wants on the network.
This Is Irrelevant: Will is technically a licensed pilot for ships up to and including freighter-class vessels. Spaceships, that is, he doesn't know anything about sea ships. His license is actually long-expired, but it's not like he forgot everything.
Voice: Will has an accent that's really hard to place, as it's about a thousand years removed from modern American English speakers, clouded by his poor emoting abilities, and further muddled by conscious effort to change it. He has a rather flat tone, almost uniformly low except on emphasized words, which he sort of pushes out with a slight rise in pitch. It's a strange mix between monotone and animated and it's sort of hard to explain, but it sounds a bit like constant sarcasm, to the point where it's difficult to tell when he is or isn't joking. His facial expressions have almost as much to do with his communication style as his speech patterns, but someone unused to reading them probably wouldn't pick that up as well; they're pretty subtle. He speaks only English fluently but he can get by in a fair handful of other tongues, human and non-human, and he can read them better than he can speak them. Technically he should be speaking a very specialized dialect developed on the industrial space colonies, but he's taken some pains to re-learn to talk like a member of higher society, which idolizes and emulates old-world Earth.
Scent: He definitely smells like coffee, but also probably soap.
Mental Information: Will has no mental defenses or psychic abilities. For mind-readers, his thoughts are typically quick and focused, making very swift connections. He has a naturally well-ordered mind that only gets thrown off in situations of high anxiety. He's usually hyper-aware of the other people in a room with him, and his interactions with others are always colored by a deep distrust. It's probably worth noting that he most definitely has PTSD, both from the incident in his childhood and more recent events. He has never sought treatment for this condition, so it's run unchecked for quite a while.
Biological Information: Will is entirely human, though he's many generations removed from Earth. Growing up in simulated gravity, which isn't as strong as the Earth's, he has a generally weaker musculoskeletal system than a typical Terran-born person. On the plus side, he has a larger lung capacity and can survive more easily in lower-oxygen environments (much like people who generationally live at high altitudes). Aside from those abnormalities, he's in generally good health, though possibly with a slight vitamin D deficiency.
Magical Information: Will has no magical qualities whatsoever. Magic does not exist in his universe.
