CHARACTER INFO
Character Name: Dr. William Ingram
Age: 32
Canon: Original

World Description: Will is from The Future, a capitalist nightmare where mega-corporations own half the universe. The year is unspecified, but in his time, travel between star systems is very much a thing and intelligent alien life has long since been discovered, befriended, and warred with, and at this point it's become mundane. He comes from a human culture that has outgrown the Earth and now exists mostly elsewhere.

Great big swaths of the Earth have been turned into nature preserves, and what's left of the habitable portions operate like semi-independent states beneath an umbrella government. There are orbiting and space-faring colonies (most of which are used for manufacturing or agriculture) but in the last 50 years or so, technology has advanced enough to actually terraform Earthlike planets into perfectly(?) hospitable worlds for further colonization. Most of these are run by aforementioned mega-corporations.

History: Will grew up in a cramped metal box floating in a vacuum. His family was essentially indentured to a company, working in a chemical plant on a small space station. Around the time he was 14, the company ran a lottery-style selection, picking workers to become colonists for a new terraforming project. His family was among the winners, but this turned out to be rather unfortunate. Corners had been cut; the colony planet wasn't exactly fit for human habitation, and between the harsh conditions, disease, and general lack of knowledge, people started to die. A massive storm destroyed most of their supplies, and Will, being a clever child, figured out that they no longer had enough for more than a small handful of people to survive long enough for rescue. With people already fighting one another for resources and his parents already dead, Will decided to make sure he got off the planet alive. He put his chemistry knowledge to work and poisoned most of the other survivors. The rest blamed each other and self-destructed. When he was picked up three weeks later, he'd been the only one left for a while.

In order to cover up its mistake and pretend this never happened, the company paid Will off to keep his mouth shut about the disaster. He was perfectly content with this, and used a great deal of the money on an education he previously couldn't even hope for. After achieving an unnecessary amount of degrees in chemistry, geology, ecology, and engineering, he went to work as a freelance consultant/overseer on colonization projects, specifically terraforming. It's possible this is some attempt to prevent another disaster like the one he experienced, but that's giving him an awful lot of credit.

Death: Will was hired along with several other scientists as part of a mystery project involving an uninhabitable planet that was suspected to have once been inhabited. Something about the ancient alien technology left behind made everyone go a little nuts, and someone started murdering people. Will has no idea by whom, but he was attacked, and though he fought back, he isn't much of a challenge. He got stabbed several times and left to die, which was a mistake. Before he passed out from blood loss, he dragged himself to the bridge of the ship they were all staying on, set the ship to crash into the planet, and locked everyone else out of the system. He at least died with the knowledge that his killer was going with him.

What are your plans for this character in-game? Will's primary functions as an NPC are to make apps for the tablets, solve technological problems, and give occasional advice to the general character population. He's much harder to deal with than some of the other NPCs, but he's motivated by his own survival (so to speak), his own wants, and primarily spite. His knowledge may come at a bit of a cost, but he does generally know what he's talking about. Don't worry, he won't let anyone forget that. Aside from his practical game-mechanic functions, I'd love to see if he'll continue to be an incredibly self-serving asshole, or if he'll maybe grow as a person.

What aspects of this game and/or its setting are you most interested in having this character engage with? I'm eager for other characters to have to deal with him, but I also apologize in advance.

How does your character generally get along with other people? Not Well. He's petty, self-centered, sometimes outright mean, and he's easily irritated. If he thinks he can use someone, or if they're important to his continued existence, he'll tend to be a little nicer, but he finds most other people pretty intolerable and untrustworthy. He has a very cynical worldview in which human relationships are matters of convenience and easily broken under the right circumstances. This doesn't exactly translate to healthy friendships.

What is your character's mental state upon entering the game? Will hasn't just arrived in Beacon, but at the start of the game his mental state will be somewhere between determined and moping. He's frustrated and upset about recent events, but he's not about to be deterred from reaching his goals. When things try to kill him, he just sort of takes that as a challenge.

Personality: Will's not a sociopath, but it's an easy mistake to make. His moments of empathy are few and far between, and that's by choice. He keeps other people at arm's length on purpose, believing that everyone is using everyone else, and that they're only a few steps away from frothing, feral anarchy at any moment. He can be obsessively driven or completely apathetic, and is never anywhere in between. He's opinionated, blunt, and used to being able to speak his mind without consequences. He's a bit of a hedonist, and unless it's dangerous, he rarely denies himself something he wants. He's very intelligent, and unfortunately well aware of that fact.

Items: - Glasses (corrective eye surgery is a thing but why would he let someone laser around in his eyeballs???)
- Knife (it was stuck in him oops)
- ID card (basically a one-function mini tablet, clear and thin as a credit card)
- Pills (stimulants, not prescribed)
- Beacon tablet (very jailbroken)
- Lantern

Skills/Abilities: - Really Smart. Naturally quick-witted, but also very formally educated. He has two PhDs. His field specialty is terraforming, which requires a combination of geology, biology, chemistry, and programming.
- Good with computers and technology in general. He probably couldn't create an advanced AI, but the tech level of Beacon is child's play to him.
- This will literally never come up I'm sure, but it's worth mentioning: Will is technically a licensed pilot for ships up to and including freighter-class vessels. The license is expired, of course, but he still earned it.
- Has some first aid and survival skills. He's not Bear Grylls, but he did live alone on an alien planet for a while, so there's that.

Flaws/Weaknesses: - Insomniac. Pretty much always operating on little to no sleep. While this isn't as much of a weakness in Beacon, he takes it to some drastic extremes.
- PTSD. Certain situations can trigger nasty flashbacks, panic attacks, and general psychological fuckery. It's a bad time. His triggers include being surprised from behind, very small spaces, and severe windstorms.
- Physically unfit. Will's not going to be winning any marathons anytime soon. He was born and raised in a low-gravity atmosphere, spent his formative age in a cramped space station, and hasn't willingly set foot on a planet in years. Long story short, he is suffering, and he refuses to do any heavy lifting.
- Allergic to bees. Like, deathly allergic.
- Generally a Bad Person that no one wants to be around. Selfish, spiteful, and sometimes needlessly cruel. Distrusts nearly everyone. Thinks really lowly of people.
